This book revisits early archaeological excavations at UR and Carchemish.  Unusual inscriptions that appeared on monuments and old clay tablets mystified early travelers. In 1906 at Hattusa a German expedition found archives of the Hittite kings in an unknown language.  Bedrich Hrozný discovered that Hittite belonged to the Indo-European family of languages. This laid the groundwork for the development of Hittitology. His greatest achievement:  The decipherment of the Hittite language.
